Abdominoplasty
An abdominoplasty or tummy-tuck is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the abdomen through the elimination of excessive skin and fatty tissue and through the tightening of the musculature of the abdominal wall, achieving a firm and flat abdomen. The best candidates are men and women with abundant fatty deposits in the abdomen and a considerable laxity of the skin and muscles in this region that does not respond to diet or exercise. Other candidates are women who have had multiple pregnancies. In certain cases, other procedures such as liposuction may be combined in the same operative period. Dr. Bravo performs a technique called Thinning, in which a direct excision of the subcutaneous fatty tissue is performed in order to mold and give shape to the abdomen.
What anesthesia will be used?
The procedure is normally carried out under general or epidural anesthesia, requiring a stay of one night in the hospital.
How will the scars be?
The length of the scars depends proportionally on the “excess” skin of the patient. When there is a small amount of skin excess, a mini-abdominoplasty may be carried out, with or without an associated liposuction, which produces a scar very similar to that of a normal C-section. It is usually placed above the pubic hairline and in both inguinal regions, which allows them to remain covered by a bikini.
How is the recovery?
During the first few days it is normal to feel tightness around the operated region. It is generally recommended, during the first few days of the post-operative period, to use a compressive garment and to avoid physical strain.
