Breast Augmentation

This procedure consists in the placement of an implant or prosthesis behind the breast in order to increase its volume. The latest advancements both in implant technology and in surgical technique, have made breast augmentation a viable option with an increasing popularity for women of all ages who wish to change their physique. The decision to undergo a breast augmentation may provide patients with a more balanced figure, more choices of clothing to choose from and an invaluable increase in self-esteem and confidence.

Where is the implant placed?

The implant may rest in place right behind the mammary gland and in front of the pectoralis muscle, or it may lay behind the muscle. Dr. Bravo employs as well the subfascial placement, an intermediate location between the ones mentioned previously and that shares advantages of both of them. The decision regarding where the implant should be placed must be made together with the patient, after discussing extensively the advantages and disadvantages of each location.

How will the scars be?

In order to place the implants, different approaches may be taken, which usually require small skin incisions. These may be performed on the axilla, around the areola or at the infra-mammary crease. The decision regarding where the incisions should be placed depend on individual breast characteristics and implant type. Scars will improve over time and depending on their location may eventually become barely visible.

How are the breast implants?

The implants employed consist of an outer shell made of silicone with a soft touch feel, which may be filled with saline or liquid silicone. The more modern implants have the option as well of being filled with a so-called cohesive gel, which offers added safety. There are also different sizes and shapes (round or tear-drop) and Dr. Bravo will decide together with you, the one that may be the most appropriate depending on your particular preferences.

What anesthesia will be used?

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthetics with deep sedation. General anesthesia may also be indicated.

How is the recovery?

Usually the breast will be swollen for several days. Sometimes there might be a temporary altered sensation around the areolas or other parts of the breast, which should recover with time. Normal activities and work may be undertaken between the second and seventh day post-op.
